Rick Detwiler

An educator through and through, Rick Detwiler has been a teacher and administrator
in the United States and abroad since mustering out of the US Navy in 1973. He started
as a high school science teacher in Westwood, MA, and then Rick and his wife Sandi
taught as Peace Corps Volunteers for two years in Botswana. For the next ten years he
was a teacher and principal at schools in Northwestern Vermont, including Charlotte
Central School where Ben Mason’s oldest son was a first-grader. In 1988, Rick and
Sandi and their three children headed back overseas. He moved to Greece to become
middle school principal at American Community Schools in Athens. After 3 years in
Greece, Rick moved to Tel Aviv, Israel for 7 years as Superintendent of the Walworth
Barbour American International School. Then on to Dhaka, Bangladesh where he was
Superintendent of the American International School. Next came a five-year stint as
Director of the American International School of Budapest, Hungary. He finished his
career with three years as Superintendent of Grade, The American School of São Paulo,
Brazil.
In addition to travel, Rick and his family also love to sail and ski. Rick uses his carpentry skills to rehabilitate and maintain their rural home and lakeside cottage in Vermont. Rick joined Mason Associates in 2009. His wife Sandi is a retired ESL teacher. They have three children ages 29-33. The oldest is following in the footsteps of her parents, now teaching first grade at the American School of Doha, Qatar.
